Greetings from sunny Dumbarton!
«
on:
January 23, 2009, 03:34:24 AM »
Hello, I have just joined this forum which I happened to stumble across whilst trying to find out where in the world I can keep practicing throughout the summer months.
Anyway, I play for Dumbarton and have been playing for just over a year.
Anyway, thanks.

I was talking about the *ahem* weather, but on thinking about it, I really should have put
'Sonny Dumbarton'
Anyway, hello! where do you play??
I will be seen floating/faffing about Brahead, trying to get my level of Curling up to at least a level where it is completely and utterly diabolical!

I happen to be largely nocturnal you see!!
in truth, my job does it's best to keep me in check, but I just am not diurnal by nature!!
Anyway, yesterday I went to Braehead and curled for the first time in the Saturday morning sessions.
I got to play skip for the first time ever and promptly buggered it up!!
Anyway, once demoted back to a second, I was in more familiar territory and was able to enjoy myself better.
With my name being Third, my eventual position for play is obvious!!
I think I'll be back next week as it was pretty good experience, even though you are sometimes playing with complete beginners.

You will be a happy late curler then 11.15pm sessions i personally hate!
Dont worry about your first attempt at skipping, my first was a disaster. But last week i was dumped in at the deep end again and skipped for the second time and won 10-3, i played a great game and had some cracking shots. I have happily gone back down the rink since and my eye for the game seems to have improved from the experiance of playing up on the head. So keep at it and good luck.

Hi and welcome to the boards.
11.15pm sessions? Where on earth do you play at that hour? And how long does that session last? You see, in Switzerland, we normally have 1.5 - 2 hrs sessions and I find it kind of hard to imagine that one plays until 1am on a regular basis...
regarding the skipping, it may be not such a good experience in the beginning (since you'll most probably be butchered by the other skip who most likely has superior tactical knowledge), but after a couple of sessions and maybe some explanations by another skip, it really is an eye opening experience and you see the game from a whole different perspective

It was a practice thing, so it was ok, all laid back enough, and I was being told what to do, which was interesting enough.
Just my own shots that helped muck it up more than anything else, that's all!
I will be back to try again, so be afraid, be VERY afraid!! .... unless you are on another team that is!
And yes, I like late sessions (playing at ANY time though is good enough for me!), although sometimes they can be a bit of a pain if you have something the next morning, as I'm sure you will know!

I used to like the late sessions starting at 10:30pm, everyone else was too tired to keep up with the team I played in at the time

Oooopsy. I meant that we finish then. Sorry, me being blonde! These are bad enough as by the time youn drive home and switch off the curling and driving part of the brain it seems like time to get up again. Slight exageration possibly there.
I play third often enough to have a ROUGH idea of what i am doing. I can now see why my skip does certain shots and give an opinion of what i think if i feel appropriate (if im playing third). Also helps in pairs when you need to have that knowledge.
The mixed pairs competition was a great chance for me this season. I palyed with someone who is probably the best curler at our rink. He expalined to me exactly why he gave certain ice and talked me through each of the shots. he also asked for my input and gave me the freedom of giving him the ice i thought was correct. He would correct me if he thought i was wrong, this gave me the confidence to give skipping a try.
I do see the game from a diffrent prespective and have learnt to always take a very warm jumper with me incase i get thrown in at the deep end again and asked to skip as it is cold work

Hehe, jeah 9.50pm is still bearable. Normally my club plays from 6.30 to 9pm and the interclub league starts at either 6.30pm or 9.30pm, the later already being kind of late for a match to my liking. Because by the time your finished it's 10.30, so by the time you sit down in the bar to buy your opposition a drink (if you won), it's something like 10.40pm which kind of cuts the conversation short and that often really is a shame...

Yeah Lockerbie plays some of its skins at 9.30 which means that the games don't finish until midnight and sometimes after due to the amount of thinking and tatics involved in the skins format! No post match drinks unless we pop down to the local nightclub!

Hamilton used to have a midnight league on a Friday which started at 1030 - and young curlers would come out from Glasgow after a game at Crossmyloof sometimes to round off the evening.
When I first played curling in England it was at Streatham and it was a Sunday evening after the ice hockey - now you know how unreliable the finishing time of an ice hockey game can be - so sometimes it was well after 10 before we got on and when we came off there were ice dancers going on after us!!

Stretham - Ah yes!! I spent the best part of 2 months on and off in 2005 following the slammers around the South east until they were withdrawn in November of that year.
A mission that took me from Weymouth to Sandwich, Cannon Street to Newhaven Marine, via Hinton Admiral, Rowland's Castle Christ's Hospital and Bat And Ball.
