Ok then, heres the story. I have to write a pretty big project, and i have decided to make it curling related. A part of this project is to find out why some rinks close and why some are succesful. What i am needing are the names of all the ice rinks that have been up and running in Scotland over the past 30 years or so, and because i am not that old i dont know them all. So far my list goes like this:

Brora x
Inverness
Elgin
Aberdeen
Aviemore x
Pitlochry x
Forfar
Letham Grange x
Dundee
Perth
Lochgoilhead
Forest Hills x
Stirling
Kinross
Kirkcaldy
Braehead
Summit Centre x
Hamilton
Waterfront
Lagoon Centre x
Hamilton
Greenacres
Gogar x
Livingston x
Murrayfield
Galleon
Ayr
Harvies x?
Dumfries
Kelso
Lockerbie
Stranraer

If anyone can add to this is would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Okthen

You've included Hamilton in your list twice.

Magnum, Irvine
Cumbernauld x
Crossmyloof x
Haymarket x

And then again, some places have rinks now replacing earlier ones. Aberdeen has had two previous rinks where there was curling, plus there was curling at the Linx when it was first open.

Similarly the rink at Dundee replaces two previous rinks.

The Dewar's Rinks, Perth, replaces an older facility.

Falkirk and Dunfermline had rinks too, but you maybe don't want to go that far back.

Have fun!

Magnum at Irvine is scheduled to close after this season and is to be replaced by an upgraded Harvies at Stevenson.

I think the shortest-lived ice rink in Scotland was the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow which hosted the 1985 (I think ?) world championships ?

Well recalled JJK. There was certainly curling at the Chrystals Arena in Glenrothes.

The other thing I remembered as I was falling asleep last night was that the current rink at Ayr is a replacement for an earlier facility.

The rink that was built at the Kelvin Hall for the 1985 Silver Broom was certainly quite a feat, and was always intended to be a temporary facility, just for the duration of the event. Not many know that there had been an ice rink in the Kelvin Hall in the 1930s which was used for skating. I can find no record of curling ever having been played on this earlier rink. During the war, the Kelvin Hall was on standby to be used as a morgue, had it been needed because of German bombing.

And thinking about temporary rinks, the one laid in Princes Street Gardens a few years back was used for a curling demonstration.

A friend has been in touch privately to remind me of Coylumbridge, near Aviemore. How could I have forgotten!

There was a very little curling at the rink at St Enoch's Centre in Glasgow when it first opened.

I did not know this but apparently there was some curling at the Centrum rink in Prestwick when it opened.

Thank you very much for all the help. Was the Coylumbridge rink a seperate one from Aviemore?

Yes there was a large rink for curling , skating and Ice hockey in Aviemore. In the Aviemore centre along with a swimming pool, shops and a theatre. Very civalised but it all gradually closed down starting with the Swimming pool! The Coylumbridge rink was an out door. (it had a cover of sorts but was open) and was mainly skating there may have been some curling but I dont think it was large enough.

I have happy memories of playing in the rink in the Aviemore Centre, eg the Chalet Motels trophy! The Uniroyal World Junior Championship was held there in 1976, see here:
http://curlinghistory.blogspot.com/2008/08/uniroyal-world-junior-championship-1976.html

The Coylumbridge rink was in the grounds of what is now the Hilton Hotel. Jim is right, it was somewhat short, and curling was never the major activity. I believe it burnt down (?).
