This sounds like a subject for the SCF to get their curling mittens into. It would appear that the World Cup of Curling event in Canada this weekend is using a 5 stone free guard zone.

See the video on this page.

If you can't see an easy team in your section of the draw, then you're the easy team!

Not before time.

I think that it may well affect the advantage of having the Hammer. It won't remove that advantage, but will force a considerable rethinking of the Tactical play at the beginning of each end.

An interesting idea which will certainly require a rethink of tactics but might also be unpopular if it slows the game down too much.  I would like to see it in action - hopefully later today.

The experiment of the new rule will not be tried until the BDO Grand Slam event Dec 14 to 18 in Kingston, Ontario.

All of the skips in this weekend's Slam event were polled and unanimously agreed to trying it in December.

It will be interesting to see how much impact it has in terms of changing strategy. The most obvious effect is the team with hammer gets a free attempt to go around  a corner guard because the team without hammer can't start peeling the corner guards until their fourth shot.

Mixed Doubles in essence already has the 5 rock rule albeit that includes the house as well as the FGZ.

Quote
WCF:  R14
(e) No stone in play, including the “positioned” stones and those in the house, can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone that can remove any stone from play). If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced to their original position by the non-offending team.
