I'm with John. Just switch the sound off.  I'm sure the commentary team are exactly right for the non curlers watching. Thats not us.

Watching the mens game vs France and I'm trying to work out why the stone was removed from play at the start of end 2.
I've been on the WCF rulebook trying to work it out too?

Perhaps someone with more knowledge could enlighten me.
Found it very interesting that DM and EM were discussing having a rulebook

Please can somebody with greater knowledge tell us why this happened?  I've only been curling for about 50 years and I've never seen it before, in fact, on outside ice it is common for 2 players to leave the ice for a small refreshment or a visit to the bushes  Grin

From Al Camerons blog

"Ladies and gentlemen, for your reading pleasure, I present to you rule R4 (b) (ii) of the World Curling Federation’s rulebook:

-- The player in charge of the house is positioned inside the hog line, and on the ice surface of the playing end, while the team is in the process of delivery.

I offer that to you as background for an odd incident in the second end of the Britain-France men’s game this afternoon when the Brits had a rock thrown by lead Euan Byers yanked from play, because it was thrown while David Murdoch was not on the ice. He was, in fact, on the carpet behind the sheet.
Betcha didn’t know that rule, right?
Didn’t seem to hurt the Brits; in fact, they may want to consider doing it every time they don’t have hammer because they ended up stealing two."

That is clearly a much safer way of throwing through the house, and should be adopted by all teams playing WCF rules.

Never played on ice so swingy that the "legal" area for the skip to stand in as defined above was too small, I do remember playing Colin Hamilton once in Aviemore where to give centre-guard ice you had to stand about four feet in front of the house at the side of the sheet. Fabulous fun was had by all - especially Colin who can't often lose seven ends and win the game!

One of the most ridiculous rules I've ever heard of and it was quite clear that Dufour didn't want to remove the stone.  Can someone explain to me what this rule achieves?

This rule certainly doesn't seem to follow the first item in the WCF rule book, "The spirit of curling".

@onthebutton

"spirit of curling" - don't be silly, this is the Olympics

"What does this achieve"  - it helps make curling conform to all other sports, where the game is controlled by officials, not the players. Or had you not noticed that this is where we are going?

I wait with interest to see whether there's any feedback on this.

But from the WCF June 2008 rulebook currently in force
R4.
(b) Delivering Team:
(i) The skip, or the vice-skip when it is the skip's turn to deliver, is in charge of the house.
(ii) The player in charge of the house is positioned inside the hog line, and on the ice surface of the playing end, while the team is in the process of delivery.
(iii) The players who are not in charge of the house or delivering a stone take a position to sweep.

Clearly DM was not on the ice surface so the delivered stone was not legal, which I think is what the lady umpire said. Illegal stones obviously cannot play any part in the game.

I have seen this rule enforced a couple of times and also a stone taken off because the skips foot was on the adjacent sheet when giving ice. Panjandrum is a word which often enters my mind on these occasions. Spirit of curling does not have a bearing on officials and in fairness they are there to implement not interpret rules but.....
There are of course differences between rccc and wcf rules including the one highlighted at the edinburgh international last year when an international team called a foul on our last stone of the game when going for an outwick because our running stone touched the side line... perfectly permissible in rccc rules and probably playable at international competition where the sheet would normally be a bit wider than in scotland.

A column from today's Globe and Mail (Canada's closest to a national newspaper)

Looks like their TV critic is a convert to curling - pretty good considering he's originally from Ireland.

Thanks Z - I've got the GB-Sui game on TV and I am obviously watching it.  I've also got the Can - Swe game on the PC (http://www.eurovisionsports.tv/olympics/) but without sound.  The channel had sound OK yesterday.  Any ideas anyone?

that was a tough one.  I thought GB had blown it a couple of times, and then were left a "simple" tap back to beat the Swiss.........

I think the guys are made of stern enough stuff to deal with it.  Not sure that I am!
