Thought I'd start a new thread just for discussion about the curling at the games.

I'm watching GB v Sweden and enjoying the coverage. All the players are miked up. Now, if the commentators would just SHUT UP when the team are discussing options amongst themselves, and with their coach, then we might all learn something.

Im with you on this Bob, it is highly annoying having those two prattle on, I want to hear what David et al are saying, then we would know the real reason for the shot instead of them second guessing

but other than that Im really enjoying this game watching it live, great

Yeah I agree, especially when they had called a time out, the commentators continued to talk over the discussions of David Hay & Murdoch, how annoying. The coverage was very good though, altho I was just wishing they would update us on Canada v Norway a bit more often, would TV rights not allow them to change over to that match for example at the end. However all round it is very pleaseing to finally see live curling on the BBC. Looking forward to more!

I am sure everyone who posts here would prefer to hear the players rather than the commentators. Yet there could be newbies watching, who need a bit of extra help to understand what is going on. An impossible square to circle with only one audio channel. Quite why we cannot select  the volume we want on either of two audio channels I don't know.

Also Enjoyed Germany against USA in the link that Z posted.

PS. There's a rather good chap on ebay selling custom chefs trousers which work rather well for curling too.
I have a pair of these

Thank you David (nice name Smiley ) for recognising that some of us new players need help. I personally appreciate the prattle of the presenters though likewise would enjoy listening to the teams speak.

It is wonderful to be able to watch Curling on Television but sad that it is only for two weeks.

Steve and Rhona have to talk over the discussions I'm afraid.
Otherwise it's dead air to any non curling buffs.
it's not as if the old addage of not commentating when the pictures do it for you applies, it doesn't.

People watching their 4 yearly fix of curling will want to know what is being discussed and what the options are. That's why old pro Steve Cram keeps asking Rhona what the options are, and you can tell that she is describing what options the players are discussing.

Also I think Steve and Rhona are probably more understandable to the majority of the population (that is the 50million non Scottish curlers South of the border) than the players - even I sometimes have difficulty picking up the meaning of some of the more team-specific terms they use, not helped by the accents!! And remember I am Scottish.

I'm sorry to disagree with Hogline and JMLB on this one. Last nights game was on the red button watched mainly by curling fans. If it was the final watched by a few million I could maybe see some logic in the "beginners guide". I appreciate Rhona will have been given a brief BUT I still think it detracts greatly from our (the curling public) enjoyment of the event. I think this formulaic mix (quizzical presenter and expert) which the bbc goes for, is old hat. Get TWO proper experts that understand the sport and that is the best way to communicate what is happening. I think over-simplification of any sport detracts from it. (I will however admit steve cram is much better than "Oor Dooglie" ).
Surely it wouldnt break the bank to have a couple of high profile experts (say Hammy and Karen Addison) in a studio discussing and analysing the game afterwards. It is then that the tactical aspects of the sport could be highlighted to the interested layman.

Considering that it was the first time the Steve and Rhona had commentated on a full game of curling, I think they did a reasonable job. But it won't be easy for them with a lot of games to come. jjk makes a good point - I would love to hear and see other experts brought in. Listening just to hours and hours of Steve and Rhona is going to get (dare I say) tiresome.

(By the way jjk, just what is it that I've said that you disagree with?)

My original point was simply this. The TV people have gone to all the bother to mike up ALL the players. Why bother, if we are not going to hear what they are saying? When the coach comes down in a timeout, surely this is the point for the commentators to say, "Let's listen to the discussion." Then when the decision is made, there is plenty of time for Rhona to talk about options.

Hopefully too they can learn to use the telestrator at some point, or employ someone (where are you Mark?) who knows what to do.
